History : Following five years of success with the 3 Litre model, production of the 6 ½ Litre began in 1926. It was originally conceived in 1924 to solve the problems encountered with the Long Standard 3 Litre models performance. The heavier coachwork on the 1 ½ inch longer 3 Litre chassis added weight and in turn made the car sluggish compared to the shorter lighter examples. The new model was originally envisaged to house a 4 ½ Litre engine built along the basic lines of the 3 Litre engine. However the now infamous encounter between the prototype car and the prototype Rolls-Royce New Phantom in France in 1924 following Le Mans lead to the increase in capacity to 6597cc on all production chassis. The first 6 ½ Litre model was shown at the 1925 Earls Court Motor Show with the first production cars being delivered in early 1926. In 1928 the Speed Six was introduced which quickly became legendary in racing terms, winning and placing in several major races between 1929 and 1931, including victories at Le Mans in 1929 (Barnato and Birkin) and in 1930 (Barnato and Kidston). The Speed Six differentiated itself from the standard 6 ½ Litre with green badges, a parallel sided radiator, a number of detail changes to the engine and the introduction of twin SU HVG 5 carburettors. This particular 6 ½ Litre Bentley was supplied originally in January of 1928 to Dr A H Richardson (Chassis No PR 2304, Engine No PR 2314 and Registration No YU 9651) with a coupe body by Harrison. Following a number of changes of ownership it was acquired in the mid 1970’s by Bentley enthusiast Ian Rendall of Gloucestershire. During Mr Rendall’s ownership it was restored over several years using Engine No BR 2359 and Chassis No TW 2705. The chassis was shortened to 11 feet 2 ½ inches, similar to the Le Mans team car specification, improving the handling and overall performance of the car. A new body was built by Roger Cook in a style reminiscent of the Vanden Plas long winged tourer. The standard 6 ½ Litre engine was also upgraded to Speed Six specification with the instillation of twin SU HVG 5 carburettors. The Bentley Works built three original Speed Six team cars with Vanden Plas long winged bodies and Mr Rendall’s goal was to build a replica as close to the originals as possible. Following several years of enjoyment Mr Rendall sold the car in the 1980’s to another Bentley Drivers Club member who during his ownership fitted a Phoenix camshaft and a Le Mans 50 gallon petrol tank. A further change of ownership ensued some five years on with another Bentley Drivers Club member purchasing the car. He set about further improvements during his ownership which included fitting a new water pump, radiator core, brake drums and linings. New tool boxes were also fabricated and fitted to the running boards with the hood, tonneau cover and hood bag also being replaced. The car most recently changed ownership in 2006 and was used at the West Virginia North American Vintage Bentley Meeting in 2006 and then the NY North American Vintage Bentley Meeting in 2007. Following these meetings the owner instructed a total engine re-build to ensure complete reliability on long distance tours across the United States. The work was carried out by Automotive Restorations of New Jersey. Work instructed and carried out at the time included fitting hardened valve seats, new valves, Aries pistons, new rod and main bearings and a new ring gear. The car still drives beautifully, just as one would expect following such extensive works in recent times. This handsome 6 ½ Litre Bentley presents very well in every respect and will undoubtedly provide a great deal of motoring pleasure to its next fortunate owner.

Condition : Very good condition throughout.
Technical Data : Four speed manual gearbox, 6 cylinder in-line engine, 6.5 litres displacement, 6,597cc capacity. Four wheel brakes.
