Im April 1978 begann die Serienproduktion des T-Modells (S 123) im Mercedes Werk in Bremen. Das Heck mit seiner hohen Abschlusskante machte aus dem neuen Fahrzeug ein echtes Raumwunder. Eine serienmäßige hydropneumatische Niveauregulierung an der Hinterachse sorgt für hohen Fahrkomfort unabhängig vom Gewicht der Zuladung, das bei dem rund 1500 Kilogramm schweren T-Modell bis zu 45 Prozent des Leergewichts beträgt.
